Diego David Cuevas

He started his musical career in the Municipal Band of Villarrobledo, guided by his father, who was then in 1975 the director of the band. After years of study and having finished the degree in Clarinet he worked for the Municipal Band of Badajoz (Spain), directed by Pérez Ribes, and he also attended the youth orchestra of the region. He combined his early teaching career with the study of the degree in Composition, under figures such us Manuel Castillo in Sevilla, Román Alís in Madrid and Teresa Catalán and Agustín Charles in Zaragoza. In 1998 he got the position of Professor of Harmony by taking a competitive exam, in Galicia. He had worked before for conservatories such as the Conservatory of Orense (Galicia), Alicante and Melilla, and the higher conservatories of Alicante and Vigo, where he has been teaching since the academic year 2007-2008.

As a student, he received scholarships to attend to master classes like the one granted by Injuve (the Spanish Institute of Youth) where he had the chance to work with Cristobal Halfter, Mauricio Sotelo, Toshio Hokosawa. The same way he attended a composition course in Tarragona directed by Leonardo Balada and others composition courses given by personalities such us J. María Verdú, Tomás Marco, Helmut Lachenmann, etc.

As a teacher, he has given master classes on musical analysis in a great number of conservatories all over the Spanish geography, and some online courses for the government of Galicia.

His works have been performed by numerous soloists and groups. Among the soloists, Pedro Jesús Gómez Lorente (Albacete), Israel Mira (Alicante), Rocco Parisi (Alessandria, Italy), Gregory Barret (Northern Illinois University, USA) and musical groups such as the municipal bands of Alicante, Coruña, Santiago de Compostela, Polizia di Stato (Italy), etc. His repertory has also been performed by musical ensembles like the Ensemble Contemporáneo of the Higher Conservatory of Vigo (Galicia), the Rocco Parisi´s Bass Clarinet Quartet or the percussion group Vacances Percutantes (France) and orchestras such us the Australian SBS Radio and Television Youth Orchestra or the Madrid Symphony Orchestra. Moreover, some of his works have been selected as compulsory works to be performed in music band contests like the special section of the music bands contest organized by the Galician Federation of Popular Music Bands of 2011 or the special section of the music band contest organized by the government of the city of Pontevedra (Galicia) in 2014.

In the compositional scope, he has been awarded with the following prizes.

2000: International Composition Prize for young orchestras in the city of Murcia

2003: Joaquin Rodrigo Composition Prize for Orchestra in Madrid

2008: 2nd Prize in the Latin-American Composition Contest Villa de Ortigueira with a concerto for Tenor Saxophone and Band that was premiered by Israel Mira, Saxophone Professor at the Superior Conservatory of Alicante.

2009: Finalist in the II Galician Composition Contest for Music Band, special section.

2012: Audience Award in the International Composition Contest for Percussion Vacances Percutantes, in France.

2013: 3rd Prize in the International Composition Contest for Classic Guitar Cláxica 2013, in Italy.

2013: 1st Prize, in the Romualdo Marenco International Composition Contest, in Italy.

2014: Finalist in the International Composition Contest WindStream, in Lithuania
